Krishna Paksha in Badrapada month is called Mahalaya Paksha. Mahalaya means great destruction or death. On this paksha, people of all castes perform tarpana sraddhakarmas on those dates depending on the date of death of their elders. Hence it is also called Pitru Paksha.

The fifteen days in between from Bhadrapada Manatha Padyami to Bhadrapada Amavasya are called ‘Mahalaya Pakshmulu’. These fifteen days are called ‘Mahalaya Paksha’ which are designated to perform all the sraddha, tarpana, and pindapradan duties performed by sons in memory of our deceased father, grandfather and great-grandfather. These are also called ‘Pitrupaksha’ and ‘Aparapaksha’. The main objective of this Mahalaya Paksha is to satisfy the hunger of our departed ancestors by offering food as devotion. About Pitru Shradh Puja:

Shradh Puja holds a lot of significance as per Hindu beliefs. Hindu scriptures like the Agni Puran, Garuda Puran and Vayu Puran have explained the significance of “Shradh” in great length. Shradh Puja is believed that the God of Death Yama himself explained the importance of Shradh performed on Pitri Paksha. The performance of Shraddha by a son during Pitru Paksha is regarded as compulsory by Hindus, to ensure that the soul of the ancestor goes to heaven.
